Summary of the Maxdale Bridge and Cemetery Legend

This is one of the local legends in the Austin area called Maxdale Bridge and Cemetery.

The cemetery is haunted by an old man with a limp thought to be the previous caretaker.

It is believed that an old man with a limp haunts this very old cemetery; some say he was the caretaker. There is also a small old iron bridge you have to cross to get to the cemetery, which is also believed to be haunted. If you go at night to visit the cemetery and you stop on the bridge, turn off your headlights, count to ten, then turn them back on, there will be a man hanging from a noose. He is believed to have hanged himself when he could not save the life of his girlfriend, who had drowned in the river under the bridge.

A man committed suicide by driving his truck off a small bridge on the road to the right side of the cemetery. Witnesses report a phantom old truck appearing behind them and chasing them for a moment. There are also reports of a sad presence felt through out the entire cemetery.

Background of Maxdale Bridge and Cemetery

We will be posting any information found during our research here.

From the Bridge Historical Marker:

In July 1913, the Bell County Commissioners Court, in response to repeated flooding in this area, approved construction of a bridge at this site to provide access to Killeen for residents of the Maxdale Community. Before it was completed, however, the bridge was destroyed in a flood. The Bell County Commissioners Court contracted again with Hess & Skinner Engineers, agents for the Missouri Valley Bridge Company, to build this bridge. Completed in 1914, the Maxdale Bridge employs a Parker truss design, which allows for maximum strength at mid-span. Recorded Texas Historic Landmark - 1990
